When people around the world think of Nara, they usually picture its friendly deer or the Great Buddha. But today, there's another remarkable destination attracting architecture enthusiasts from across the globe—a hidden gem with a fascinating story. It's the Former Nara Prison, an Important Cultural Property originally built in 1908 during Japan's Meiji era. 

Closed to the public for many years, this historic site has recently been transformed into both a Prison Museum, preserving its rich history, and one of Japan's most extraordinary luxury prison hotels. The stunning restoration has quickly become a major attraction.

Our team recently had the opportunity to visit!

The moment we stepped inside, we were greeted by breathtaking red-brick architecture that completely overturned our image of what a prison should look like. The exhibits thoughtfully explain the prison's history and its ingenious radial layout, in which cell blocks extend outward from a central observation hall. The architectural design is as beautiful as it is functional, making the experience deeply engaging.

At the same time, standing inside the tiny solitary confinement cells that were once actually used, and learning about the prisoners' strictly regimented, minute-by-minute daily schedules, was emotionally overwhelming. Experiencing the weight of living within such confined spaces and rigid rules made us truly appreciate something we often take for granted—the precious gift of freedom.

As a sock manufacturer, one exhibit especially caught our attention: the socks once worn by the inmates.

The display offered a glimpse into daily life and labor inside the prison, and we couldn't help but stop and study them. For us, it was a fascinating encounter with the history of what people wore on their feet more than a century ago.

The prison's sturdy red-brick walls have stood beautifully for 120 years, surviving earthquakes and the passage of time.
