Disaster Prevention Day – Let’s Think About Disaster Preparedness!

Thank you for your continued support of GUTS-MAN.

Today, we would like to share some thoughts about disaster preparedness.

In Japan, September 1st is designated as “Disaster Prevention Day.”

The reason September 1st was chosen is that it marks the day of the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923. Learning from this devastating event, Disaster Prevention Day was established in 1960 to encourage awareness and preparedness for major earthquakes.

There is also a “Disaster Prevention Week,” which includes September 1st. This year, in 2025, Disaster Prevention Week will be observed from August 30th to September 5th.

We also looked into global disaster prevention observances!

International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is an important day designated by the United Nations. Originally observed on the second Wednesday of October, it was changed to October 13th during the UN General Assembly in December 2009. This day serves as a key opportunity worldwide to raise awareness about disaster prevention and reducing damage.

What Should We Do on Disaster Prevention Day?

It is said that participating in disaster drills on Disaster Prevention Day is the best way to raise awareness of disasters and learn how to respond if one occurs. Aside from drills, it is also important for each household to check their preparedness, such as “ensuring emergency supplies are fully stocked and replacing any outdated items.”

One measure I personally recommend comes from the Japan Self-Defense Forces manual: the “rule of keeping shoes in the bedroom.” In the event of a major earthquake, glass can shatter, and without shoes, you could get injured. Simply keeping a pair of “easy-to-move-in shoes” in your bedroom can provide a great sense of security.

(For people overseas, since shoes are often worn indoors, this may be a uniquely Japanese measure.)

We encourage you to consider this for your own preparedness.

Finally, while a variety of disaster preparedness items are necessary, we hope you will consider adding GUTS-MAN socks to the list.

With their optimal compression, GUTS-MAN socks can be a reliable companion for your feet even in harsh conditions. The five-toe design also helps prevent moisture buildup.

There are many things we can do, from disaster drills to checking emergency supplies, which we cannot cover fully here. We hope that this Disaster Prevention Day will serve as an opportunity for everyone to review and improve their own preparedness measures.
